At The Vintage Mermaid, you will find designer fabric blocks, designed and copyrighted by me, as well as lovely fabric blacks that will warm your hearts as they take you back in time. These are designed with vintage mermaid pictures/images, pre-Raphaelite mermaid paintings, and an array of other vintage pictures and paintings. There is something for everyone. The Vintage Mermaid Fabric Blocks are quality made. My manufacturer supplies me with the finest, 100% cotton fabric blocks to offer you for all of your fabric block crafting desires. I am working dilligently on unique collectibles to add to The Vintage Mermaid . I will have a variety of retro vintage mermaid wall plaques, retro vintage fish wall plaques, and retro vintage seahorse wall plaques. Mermaid figurines will be added to The Vintage Mermaid and bubbles - lots of bubbles. I have had so many requests in the past for me to make extra sets of bubbles for my customers. These little "fringes" are the frosting for your collectibles. I also do starfish and my bubbles come in some unique shapes such as hearts, made from antique molds too. ANTIQUE MERMAIDS
I was at a local flea market the other day and could not believe my eyes. A seller there had a small display of antique mermaids. I stood there and of course I tried to act cool, calm, and collected. But, the sight of antique mermaids turns me on. I could hardly contain myself. She honestly did not know anything about antique mermaids or just how much I might have been willing to pay her for her antique mermaids. I asked her where she got them and she said her aunt died and she was in her house cleaning out items to get rid of and she found this small box of mermaids. I am still trying to be cool and not overly enthusiastic, but the sight of those antique mermaids was taking my breath away. I knew I had stumbled across these antique mermaids by sheer chance and the possibility of my finding this many antique mermaids at one time or any antique mermaids at my local flea market again, was not very probable. I asked her how much would she take for them. As she was talking, I was taking inventory of this pile of antique mermaids. She said make me an offer. I then realized she had no idea as to the value of these antique mermaids or that they were even antique mermaids. I did not want to take advantage of her, but at the same time, I did not want to pay a fortune for these rare antique mermaids either. I did not want to take the time to examine all of the antique mermaids since they were piled in a box and separated by newspaper. From the condition of the antique mermaids on top, which looked excellent, I was willing to go for it. So, I told her I really had only come to the flea market to kill time. Which was true. Never did I think I would find any mermaids, let alone antique mermaids. I stood there for a few seconds and she informed me that she did not know anything about them and only wanted to get rid of them. So, I said, since there are 20, what about $100. Much to my surprise, she took me up on my offer. With a smile on my face, I left that flea market with the find of a life time - 20 TWENTY YES tWeNTy antique mermaids for $100! I looked back and waved and she was smiling, so we were both happy. My hands were shaking. I new I would probably never in this lifetime find 20 antique mermaids for $100.
It is a wonder I did not get a ticket. I do not speed but that day, those antique mermaids lit a fire under me. There was not a tiger in my tank but a wild woman behind the wheel. I was in ecstacy and shock. I could not get myself and my antique mermaids home fast enough. I rolled into the driveway and blowed the horn. My husand ran to the car and asked me what I had found. When I said antique mermaids, he threw up his hands (in surrender I might add) and went back in the house. I laughed. He has really become accustomed to my antique mermaid "fetish" after all these years, although he thinks it is silly. Give him tools and he is happy.
I now had time to fawn over and check out my wonderful antique mermaid haul! All of the antique mermaids were in excellent condition, except a few had tiny chips or cracks. These antique mermaids are great. They were made by some wonderful companies long ago out of business. I will soon get busy molding these antique mermaids and you know the rest. By spring, I will be listing quality antique mermaids reproduced by me but my antique mermaids that I make will be offered to you not for antique mermaid prices, but for reasonable prices. I started collecting antique mermaids many years ago. I admire many other collectibles, but the nautical collectibles, especially antique mermaids, are my thing. Long ago, when a well known auction site was not so well known or big, I stumbled across it. Just surfing around and there it was - the most gorgeous antique mermaids I had ever seen. I found my first Florence antique mermaid and boy did I pay a hefty sum for her. She is the most treasured of any of my antique mermaids. But, I could not help myself. My enthusiasm for collecting antique mermaids soon took hold and there was no turning back. I was like an owl on the prowl, looking here, there, and everywhere, to find these lovely antique mermaids. My husband threatened to divorce me if I brought one more in the house, but I chose to continue collecting antique mermaids:) He got over it. No matter what, I could not stop collecting antique mermaids. I am hopelessly addicted to collecting antique mermaids. No hope for me!

As I continued collecting antique mermaids, I began to learn. One thing that helped me quite a bit is a book that I bought from, I believe, Amazon, written by Arleen Smith. This wonderful book put a new twist on collecting antique mermaids for me. I learned how to better qualify antique mermaids before I bid on them. I learned the value of different antique mermaids and I would not pay more than the valued price. Also, I learned not to buy the first antique mermaids I saw, especially if there was any chips, cracks, or damage. My reason behind this is: There are very few antique mermaids that are so rare the same antique mermaids will not come around the auction block again. The next antique mermaids may be in better shape and you may even win them for a better price. So, be wise collecting antique mermaids. Use your noggins and check things out well before you buy. Know the seller! That is very important. Be sure they offer a guarantee and stand behind their antique mermaids. Collecting antique mermaids is a lot of fun. Collect on! In my opinion, antique mermaids are some of the most beautiful treasures you can own. Antique mermaids fill my home. With imagination and good taste, you can fit antique mermaids into any room in your home and make them the most beautiful accents. Collecting antique mermaids is so rewarding for me. CHOOSE ANTIQUE COLLECTIBLES WISELY
I decided to write this article: CHOOSE ANTIQUE COLLECTIBLES WISELY because of some things I have recently noticed. This article is primarily for "newbies". The "well-seasoned" collectors already know how to choose antique collectibles wisely. I hope The Vintage Mermaid does not cause a tidal wave but the truth needs to be told.
First of all, and I mentioned this in another article on this page, there is a book written by Arleen Smith that will help anyone identify most of the antique collectibles I will be talking about. Then, you will be able to choose antique collectibles wisely and not get ripped off. Her book addresses antique fish, antique seahorses, and antique mermaids from the 1940's and 1950's. You may find this book on Amazon and some websites. Just do a Google and you will find it. To choose antique collectibles wisely, you need some knowledge of what you are choosing. There are antique collectibles and then there are the antique reproductions. Unfortunately, some people are sucked in by the antique reproductions. They do not know the difference between the two. I will repeat myself here. I know the difference between the antique and the antique reproductions because I do the antique reproductions and have for years. I just don't try to sell antique reproductions to you as the real thing.
I have been surfing a bit lately and have run across some "places" that are selling antique seahorses, antique fish, and antique mermaids but they are not really vintage antique collectibles. They again, are vintage antique reproductions. I highly suggest you get the book. Read, study the antique fish,vintage seahorses, and antique mermaids very well. Pictures can give you some info.
First of all, to choose vintage antique collectibles wisely, you have to know what you are looking at. Vintage antique fish, vintage antique mermaids, and vintage antique seahorses rarely had any jewelry. Occasionally, you will find a few rhinestones and some porcelain flowers - fired on, usually not glued on. On the other hand, many of the vintage antique reproductions are loaded with vintage jewelry, crushed shells, shell flowers, glitter, and so forth. I do some of mine the same way! That will be your first give away. Also, look at the backs of the items - if the seller does not have close up pictures of the front and backs of the vintage antique fish, vintage antique seahorses, or vintage antique mermaids (whichever you are buying), then I would be suspicious of that. The backs of these vintage antique collectibles do show age, whether made from chalkware or ceramic. My customers love my vintage antique reproductions. They blend right in with their other vintage antique collectibles. However, when they buy from me they know whether they are getting an actual vintage antique collectible or my vintage antique reproductions. Many of my customers buy as many vintage antique reproductions from me as they buy vintage antique collectibles. I can make my vintage antique reproductions look 95 percent like the real thing, if that is what a customer wants.
Some sellers are very shrewd in the way they word their descriptions. I have seen many (over the years) antique reproductions with tricky wording in their descriptions, that does not actually come out and say their items are vintage antique but they are doing the same wrong when they are implying it in their descriptions.
I have given you some information and things to consider plus an inexpensive book you can purchase that will help you choose vintage antique collectibles wisely. I just posted a picture of an irridescent shell with a mermaid inside. I have had several emails at The Vintage Mermaid. FABRIC BLOCKS
I just mentioned on my blog, vintagemermaidsociety.blogspot.com about the new fabric blocks I will be offering in less than two weeks. The manufacturer of my fabric blocks is swamped and is running so behind. They are expediting three test fabric blocks and I should receive those in four days. The test runs are to give me a chance to examine all fabric blocks to qualify them before I offer them for sale to any of my customers. After approval, and usually they are always great, it will be about one week and they will be sending my fabric blocks to my front door. I can hardly wait. I am excited and yet a little disappointed. They can only expedite three images for me. So, I will only have three to offer until they begin to get the other images printed onto the fabric blacks. Again, these are the test runs before the fabric blocks themselves are even printed onto the yards of fabric. So, since it is taking longer, I chose three of my favorite images to offer you first.
I enjoy crafting with fabric blocks. You can do so many different things with fabric blocks. I have put fabric blocks on totes, aprons and have even blinged them out and put them in picture frames. The use of fabric blocks is only limited to your own imagination. Then there are those fabric blocks that are perfect for quilting. I will offer you first 8 x 8 AND the big deal is, I will offer them to you at a more reasonable price than I seeing them being sold anywhere else. Yes, I want to make money with my fabric blocks but I am not greedy either. So, you will soon learn that I will be your main source for all of your fabric blocks. Eventually, I will offer 5 x 7's and the ACEO sizes. WOW, this is going to be so much fun.
My fabric blocks will be designed mainly with untouched vintage prints. I have some really beautiful pictures from Edwardian paintings to art deco and many more. I am working on some of my own designs and they will be offered within the year. For those who appreciate and love mermaids, I will offer many fabric blocks designed with vintage mermaid pictures. So, mermaids will be the number one with me. I will also offer other fabric blocks with beautiful, breathtaking images. I am very partial to the vintage mermaid pictures from Victorian days-gone-by. I so love the vintage mermaid pictures from that era. I will not say any more at this time. I want to surprise you. So, I will not give all of my secrets away. I like to decorate tote bags with fabric blocsk and embellish them. I even used fabric blocks on lamps and I have framed fabric blocks that are ebellished with vintage jewelry and findings. I frame my fabric blocks in shabby cottage frames. You can use The Vintage Mermaid fabric blocks for quilting, as well, which is very popular. My manufacturer produces quality fabric blocks.
